Massachusetts becomes the first state to make dog or cat devocalization surgery ("debarking") a criminal offense. The law, which went into effect in July, makes it a potential 5-year term of imprisonment/$2,500 fine to debark a dog. Click here to read the law.

Here is a good petition that spays and neuters homeless animals.

Is it enough that the zoo is "trying to do something good"? Does that mean we should overlook unsatisfactory conditions for the animals, inadequate protection for people, and so forth? Is the Humane Society being overly critical?
I'm afraid this sort of situation is all too common.

Seen this on photobucket, not my picture, just wanted to share with this community! I know that we all feel the same way about the animals.
Sorry but I think the picture does a very good job of describing itself! :)
The sad, sad truth must be heard. Made to make people more aware of animal cruelty in the world. Full Credit to Carly Comando for her song 'Everyday' used in this video.
Big Cat Rescue is located in Tampa Florida, during the summer months it gets extremely hot, so to help our cats beat the heat we make them popsicles!
For the smaller cats we make bloodcicles, chickcicles and sardini martinis, but for our larger residents we make super size popsicles for them to enjoy!
Watch one of our senior volunteers go through the process of making one of these giant popsicles and then hand it out to a grateful tiger!

Elephant Lucy At Valley Zoo In Canada Needs Your Help
Solitary confinement is torture for an animal as intensely social as an elephant. Yet the Valley Zoo in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is resisting calls to send its lonely elephant, Lucy, to a natural-habitat sanctuary. She needs your help now!
Please go here > http://ida.convio.net/site/MessageViewer?em_id=6681.0&printer_friendly=1
Lucy is a 34-year-old Asian elephant who was captured from the wilds of Sri Lanka and, at only age two, shipped to the Valley Zoo, where she was mainly kept alone for the next 12 years. She suffers both physically and psychologically due to the horribly inadequate conditions at the Valley Zoo, including cruel social isolation, lack of space, cold hard surfaces that damage elephants’ feet and joints, and a frigid climate that forces Lucy indoors for at least five months out of the year.
The Valley Zoo was identified in a 2007 report by elephant biologist Winnie Kiiru as the worst facility for elephants in Canada. In her report she stated:
“The climate in Edmonton is completely inappropriate for elephants.
“The question isn't whether he deserves to earn a livelihood. The question is whether Mr. Vick should be able to re-join the ranks of elite athletes in the NFL.”—Ed Sayres, ASPCA President & CEO
On Monday, July 20, former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, once the highest-paid player in the National Football League (NFL), was released from federal custody after serving a 23-month sentence for dog fighting. The investigation into the horrific activities that took place at Vick’s Virginia dog fighting operation, Bad Newz Kennels, and his 2007 federal conviction not only led to a sullied public image, but to the star quarterback being let go by his team and indefinitely suspended from the NFL.
In light of the ASPCA’s integral role in the investigation—we collected forensic evidence for the court case and led a team of behaviorists in the evaluation of the dozens of dogs rescued from Vick’s property—Ed Sayres, ASPCA President & CEO, offers his unique perspective on the release of Michael Vick and the question on everyone's mind: what will he do now?
The following are selections from Sayres's statement, which can be read in its entirety at ASPCA.org.
"…the facts are clear: Mr. Vick participated in a six-year pattern of illegal activity. His plea clearly stated that along with these activities, he savagely electrocuted and beat dogs to death after they lost their brutal fights[…]. This was not a one-time transgression or crime of passion—this was a multi-year pattern of behavior that demonstrates a startling lack of moral character and judgment.”
"Given the stature of what it means to be a part of the NFL, it is crucial that Mr. Vick first express remorse for what he has done—something that he has yet to do throughout his incarceration.”

Daphne Dimitriadou
"In studying the traits and dispositions of the so-called lower animals, and contrasting them with man's, I find the result humiliating to me."
Mark Twain (author)
Daphne's Animal Blog: http://www.daphnediforanimals.blogspot.com/

The unspeakable crimes towards other creatures around us are only half of the story.
The real issue is our indifference to them.
This is the substance of inhumanity.
Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) said: "the question is not if the animals have logic, or if they can speak, but if they suffer…Why should the law refuse its protection to any sensitive being? The time will come when humanity will extend its mantle over everything which breathes..."
Greek Law 2017 (1992): .."No one should pointlessly make an animal suffer or cause it distress. No one should abandon a domestic animal.."
The Animal Welfare Association Humaira, promotes the Ministry of Interior (Public Order), the Ministry of Development and local and other relevant bodies to request the creation of police departments and municipal police, with the sole purpose of prosecuting and combating violence against animals. Asking for authority to create divisions in the larger cities of Greece, which will aim to prevent and combat crimes against animals.
We are requesting that departments for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals be created in the large cities in Greece. In addition, we ask that people who commit these crimes against animals be prosecuted by the governing agencies of the police.

Elephant Update - Keep Up The Pressure To Rescue Tina, Jewel, And Queenie
Thank you for calling and writing to Congress and the USDA on behalf of Tina, Jewel and Queenie, the three elephants suffering at the hands of trainer Will Davenport, a chronic violator of federal animal welfare law. The USDA received so many calls that it set up a special team to handle them. And the elephants' scheduled engagements with the Shrine Circus in Idaho were cancelled, thanks to letters from IDA and our loyal members.
We are confident that only a little more pressure is necessary to achieve our goal: confiscation of the elephants and transfer to a sanctuary. Please, even if you've responded before to our appeals for these elephants, click here, read the latest update, and then send another e-mail to your representatives. Click here if you'd rather skip the update and go straight to our automatic letter-sending tool which will send these e-mails for you in 2 minutes or less. Please don't give up on Tina, Jewel, and Queenie.
