    Big Cat Rescue planned for this escape for months. Last year a baby bobcat call came in as the third one in three weeks. He only had one eye and a lump on his belly the size of an orange. Big Cat Rescue was there to get him the medical attention he needed. Emergency surgery repaired the hernia in his abdominal wall. The swelling was the contents of his intestines and other internal organs that had spilled out of the muscled area and were rubbing away at the inner lining of his skin. The attending vet, Dr. Liz Wynn, believes that his hernia and missing eye were caused by some sort of trauma. The area where he was found is completely surrounded by development in West Tampa, but bobcats are often reported there and last year one was found as road kill. After months of recuperation and rehabilitation, Chance the yearling bobcat was released. Watch the movie and see his wild dash for freedom.

    At a Council meeting in Iberville Parish Tuesday night, a fight nearly broke out between Tony the Tiger's owners and animal rights activists over the status of the animal's living conditions.

    The Sandlin family claim's the tiger is part of their livelihood and one of their own. The family opened tiger truck stop back in 1987 and has housed tigers there ever since. But in 1993, the Iberville parish council passed an ordinance that prohibits anyone from owning a wild or exotic animal.

    In the meantime Tony the Tiger will remain at the truck stop until both sides have it out in court.

Total captive tiger numbers= 10,000 +/- in various situations. (most are Amur/Bengal mixed) Tiger numbers in the wild: (based on the most recent and factual data I could find) BENGAL TIGER= 1,300-1,500 (S.Asia: India) Low numbers due to loss of habitat with population boom, need for agriculture, illegal hunting, and poor protection. China tiger was born 11-23-07 in Africa) WHAT I THINK WILL SAVE THE WILD TIGER: Letting U.S. corporations know that we want to be aware where our resources like Palm Oil come from. Our government letting China know we are unhappy with their wildlife policies (namely tiger parts used in traditional medicine) and poor protection of their endangered animals. Better protection for the tigers in their native habitats and their prey species by properly arming and funding the anti-poaching units, and better regulations allowing them to search for illegal trade. Less corrupt local governments to allow the people a chance at an economy that doesn't rely on illegal trade or over farming the land. More funding being sent over, possibly a tiger tax on all that own/exhibit tigers to go towards their conservation.     Danger of big cats in wrong hands 10:52 PM CST on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- Twice this year at two separate locations in Missouri, workers almost lost their lives in tiger attacks. The terrifying incidents prompted News 4 to examine the exotic animal trade business and the potential danger of having big cats in the wrong hands. Watch News 4 coverage > Larger player Camels, zebras, spider monkeys, ostriches, sloths, even a baboon are all for sale at Lolli Bros. livestock auction in central Missouri. (KMOV.com Extra: News 4 Investigates: Exotic Animal Trade) An undercover News 4 camera also recorded a rare white lion cub, born in a small family-owned West Virginia zoo. She'll be sold at auction to the highest bidder. The auction, which is legal, will sell hundreds of exotic species, but there is growing concern that because of auctions and backyard breeders, the big cats are winding up with people who may not appreciate the danger. Dick Stephens bought his tigers from a backyard breeder when they were cubs. Now he keeps the full-grown tigers in an outdoor cage at his home just north of Springfield. Stephens downplays the danger, but a tiger lunged at News 4's Craig Cheatham when he got too close to the cage. Three years ago, Ronda Good's 17-year old daughter Haley was supposed to be posing for a picture with a tiger cub at a Kansas sanctuary, but the cub wasn't available, so Haley stood next to a full grown tiger hooked to a chain. Haley turned to run, and the tiger attacked. Despite the obvious danger connected with owning big cats and other exotic animals, the Lolli Bros. auction has attracted a remarkable following. During News 4's visit, vehicles with license plates from thirty states and Mexico were seen in the parking lot. Julie Leicht is the executive director of the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation, a group trying to strengthen the state's exotic animal laws, which she believes are among the weakest in the country. Leicht says dangerous exotic animals like tigers, lions and bears should be microchipped and registered so the state can easily track them. She said the owners should have to pay registration fees, should not be allowed to let anyone touch the animals and should be required to get insurance. Leicht said neighboring states of Illinois, Iowa and Kansas all have stronger laws than Missouri. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration admits it has no idea how many lions and tigers are in America, but several animal welfare groups believe there could be thousands of them.
