Meet the Cats
Meet the Cats is a page dedicated to the individual snow leopards being studied by the Snow Leopard Trust in Mongolia’s South Gobi. We are following the lives of these snow leopards using GPS radio tracking collars that send us their movements in real time via satellite. Why is this important? Little is known about how snow leopards move, how much space they need, and how they use their habitat in relation to humans. Knowing this is important if we are going to lobby for protected areas large enough to encompass a snow leopard’s home range, and work with herders to mitigate snow leopard-human conflicts. This page is connected to our Follow the Cats blog category. Use these to stay connected to your favorite snow leopard, and to follow these cats as we follow them. For more information about how collaring works, please follow this link.

George Schaller Wildlife Conservationist

[image]George Schaller: Everyone's EnvironmentConservation is not just the job of biologists and officials, nor is it a goal. Rather, it’s a never-ending process in which all of us must take partGeorge Schaller, 77, is recognised by many as the world’s pre-eminent field biologist. He has studied wildlife in Asia, Africa and South America for more than 50 years. National Geographic conferred it’s Lifetime Achievement Award upon him in 2007; he is also the winner of several other prestigious awards. His studies have helped protect animals as diverse as the mountain gorilla, giant panda, lion and the Tibetan antelope. His work inspired the foundation of over 20 parks and preserves worldwide. Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Shey-Phoksundo National Park in Nepal, and the Chang Tang Nature Reserve in Tibet are some of them.We are all aware of the basic environmental problems affecting our small planet. These range from habitat destruction, water shortage, and extinction of species to pollution of air, water and land to climate change. Governments and news media serve the economy and tend to forget that everything we make, buy and use is wholly dependent on nature. The Earth is a living organism with soil, sea, air, life, sunlight and others all interacting in a way that makes us wholly dependent on natural systems for survival. Yet we have been destroying our environment at an ever-accelerating rate. We have been living off the earth’s capital rather than the interest. Therefore, as Al Gore noted, “we must make the rescue of the environment the central organising principle for civilisation.” This must involve everyone. Every personal act is also an ecological act, whether we drive a car, plant maize, write an essay on paper or computer, flick on a light. “When drinking a glass of water, think of the source,” states a Chinese proverb. Why save some species, insignificant or otherwise? We know that nature remains a supermarket for new foods, just as it is a pharmacy for new drugs. Every species is a genetic storehouse for the future. We still know little about ecology, about the function of individual species. We have no idea how many species you can lose before the whole system collapses. Human survival — even if promoted by self-interest — seems like a good argument for saving our biological diversity, for leaving future generations with options. Population growth is a critical issue for the world, but consumption of resources has a much steeper upward curve. However, it should be remembered that globalisation was already active in the 1800s. The British exported wheat to the UK for profit during the great Indian drought of 1890-1910 while thousands of people there starved to death. Certainly all countries are now fully aware of issues, but environmental concerns remain peripheral to most. Denmark has made a major effort to reduce its carbon footprint, China has had a logging ban in effect since 1998 and has established many nature reserves, Costa Rica has good forest management practices involving local communities, and Rwanda has done a superb job of protecting its mountain gorillas. There are many success stories, large and small, but certain issues — such as the related one, climate change and depletion of fresh water — have barely been addressed. About one-third of fresh water in irrigation canals is lost mainly to evaporation. Over 2,000 years ago, the Afghan civilisation had the sense to cover the canals they built. We have treated clean air, clean water, fertile soils as free public resources to do with as we want, pollute, degrade, destroy. There is no free lunch. We now have to pay the price. If we want to protect a watershed to assure clean water to those living downstream, those who give up some resource for the common good will have to be paid. If we set up a reserve to protect wildlife, the communities who have traditionally used the resources for fuel, roof thatch and others will have to be paid. It is called “payment for ecosystem services”. Similarly, companies that pollute air and water must pay. Money? If governments spent a fraction of the billions that they do on armaments and unnecessary wars, there would be ample funds to pay for truly keeping our planet healthy, beautiful, and productive. Industry and agriculture must become far more innovative, productive, and efficient. In addition, the task is to shape new attitudes and create a new design in the strategy of surviving on a crowded planet and still maintaining the full diversity of life. Gandhi said, “There is enough in the world for everyone’s need but not enough for everyone’s greed.” We know that small reserves cannot preserve widely roaming species, and, in fact, all species — plant and animal — are at risk from inbreeding or catastrophic events such as hurricanes. There is need to think of conservation on a landscape basis with areas designated for human use, core areas strictly protected as reservoirs for plants and animals, and corridors connecting core areas. To manage such a landscape will take the co-operation of government, scientists, industry, and importantly, the local communities. It is a difficult task. If solutions in conservation were easy they would have been adopted long ago. Field biologists cannot do conservation: They can mainly gather knowledge, try to educate, and prod governments to enact policies and implement action. Furthermore, conservation is based to a large extent on values other than economic — on religious, aesthetic, nationalistic, and other moral values, depending on the culture. It comes from the heart. People don’t preserve the giant panda or tiger because these animals represent biodiversity but because they touch the emotions. The Hindus have sacred groves and sacred animals. Buddhist principles include respect and compassion for all living beings. Islam says, “Allah loveth not wasters.” All cultures have a feeling of goodwill toward the environment, but the ideas have to be rekindled. Most leaders have been lax about that. Indira Gandhi was an exception, and among today’s religious leaders His Highness the Dalai Lama is a forceful voice for conservation. There are two major reasons for killing animals — for subsistence and for profit, the two often going together. Why were tigers lost from India’s Sariska and Panna reserves? Because of underpaid, indifferent, and negligent guards. That is relatively easy for the government to correct if it has the interest to save this iconic animal. Much of the poaching and smuggling of tiger skins and bones to China is now by organised gangs. India is notorious for its slow legal system and minimal fines for wildlife crime. China, by contrast, is quick and strict in its legal procedures, one reason panda poaching was greatly reduced. The killing of Tibetan antelope or chiru — for its fine wool that is smuggled to Kashmir to be woven into expensive shahtoosh shawls — carries often a jail sentence of about five to 15 years. With more rigorous protection, the killing decreased after the 1990s and the numbers are now on the increase. A good guard force is the key to wildlife protection. Tigers and leopards will prey less on livestock if the forest contains ample natural prey, a good reason for reducing poaching of deer and other species. Villagers could modify herding practices of their cattle to reduce predation, barriers could be constructed to deter elephants, and in certain instances there could be compensation for damages. Conservationists are still grappling with such issues, trying to find solutions that benefit both the wildlife and the livelihood of people. Having done wildlife field research for nearly six decades, I don’t deal in optimism and hope but in persistence.

[image]Seven new lions rescued by FOUR PAWSHope, Arandas , Muhawish, Amra and Khawla have arrived safely at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary after a long journey that started with their rescue in January this year from terrible captivity conditions. Accompanied by Her Royal Highness, Princess Alia and Sharifa Sarra Ghazi, the young cubs took their first tentative steps into their new home, their transport crate being opened by the Princess, just as the sun was beginning to set.The group of onlookers watched quietly as the cubs explored their new territory at the Sanctuary. They were released into a smaller area at first so that the LIONSROCK team can monitor their adaption, behavior and health condition for the first period where after they will be released into a larger area. For Mario and Marion, two lions from a zoo in France, LIONSROCK is now a safe haven from the notorious canned hunting industry for which they were destined. It was discovered by FOUR PAWS that they were to be sold to a lion breeding farm in the Free State, South Africa. After presenting findings of an investigation to the authorities and the zoo, it was agreed that the lions would be safe at LIONSROCK.The lions were very agitated after their long journey, growling in their transport crates. Arriving in the morning at the Cargo area in Johannesburg, they still had to make the 3 hour journey by truck to LIONSROCK. The first crate was opened by the vet from the Zoo where he had spent the first three years of his life. For a while, Mario turned his back to the onlookers who stood quietly urging him to come out. Suddenly with a growl, he sprang from the crate and into his new home. After the impressive and fierce Mario moved through the area he settled down and was later joined by Marion, who was just too shy to come out of her crate until the most of the people left.[image] [image]The arrival of these lions brings the total number living at LIONSROCK to 68 lions, all rescued from atrocious conditions from around the world. “We are delighted that these lions now have the chance to live a life of peace and dignity, with other lions and safe from cruelty” said Mr Helmut Dungler, Founder of FOUR PAWS.

[image] Letter regarding Tony The Tiger to ObamaApril 28, 2010Dear President Obama,My name is Janet and I am an ordinary, tax-paying citizen living and working in Sacramento, California. I am passionate about animal rights and advocating the end of animal suffering in the United States and beyond. I align my beliefs with the words of pacifist, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” It is time for the United States of America to step up and correct widespread animal cruelty problems that plague our nation and reflect its dismal moral progress. This letter today is actually meant for one compassionate young lady, Malia, whose tender heart for tigers is certain to be touched by this tiger’s sad tale. I hope you will share this letter with her.Dear Malia,I am writing to you about a tiger in the state of Louisiana who I am very concerned about. Perhaps you have heard of him. His name is Tony.Tony is a nine year old Siberian/Bengal tiger. He has lived his whole life as a roadside attraction at The Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete, Louisiana. His home is made of concrete and steel. He hears the loud noise and breathes the poisonous fumes of cars and trucks 24 hours a day, every single day. All he can do is pace back and forth in his lonely, steel prison with people staring at and taunting him. A sign is posted on the bars of his cage reminding people not to throw things at him. I am sure you would agree, this is not a very good life for a tiger who would much rather roam free and be with other tigers like himself. This tiger should be moved to a big cat sanctuary where he would enjoy a more natural habitat and be provided with the proper diet, medical care, and enrichment he deserves. There are at least two cat sanctuaries that are willing to take him. One is Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida, and the other is Tiger Haven in Tennessee. But, his owner will not let him go.Those of us who support the removal of Tony from the truck stop want nothing more than for this beautiful cat to have a peaceful, clean, safe home in a natural habitat where he will be cared for with respect and professionalism. You can find out more about Tony the Tiger and ways you can help by visiting: freetonythetiger.wordpress.com. Thank you for caring about tigers, Malia.Mr. Obama, could you please share this letter with Malia and see if there isn’t something you and she can do to free this tiger from his life behind bars? Here is a chance for you to work one small miracle for one sad tiger and to become a true hero in your daughter’s eyes. Thank you.Sincerely, Janet Weeks Tony the Tiger: roadside attraction

Lions Poisoned by Furadan Pesticide

[image]In the growing conflict of Lions versus Cattle, Lions are being decimated with a poison called Furadan. African herders whose livestock and livelihood are threatened by lions are killing them in the most effective and economical way they can.And overwhelmingly, that is by using a cheap American chemical called Furadan. It is marketed as a pesticide, to be used for protecting crops. But it’s bought by many to kill animals. And that’s one reason why, conservationists say, Africa’s lions are in trouble.Dr. Laurence Frank, of the University of California Berkeley, says that he believes that poison, combined with other threats, will make the lion in Africa extinct. It’s one of the most toxic pesticides sold in Kenya, widely available and hard to detect because it dissipates quickly in poisoned animals. Lab tests, he says, ruled out any other poison. So why would anyone want to poison these glorious creatures? The area is inhabited by the Maasai people, and Kasanga, a Maasai tribesman, is now try to avert that disaster and save the lions. He is a leading member of the Lion Guardians, a group of reformed Maasai warriors who keep track of collared lions and warn herders when the lions get too close to their cattle.Last year, they were too late in reaching an old herder whose cow had been killed. The herder laced the carcass with poison, knowing the lions would return to finish their meal. That night, Sengale and Birdie, two collared lions the Guardians knew well, feasted on it. If the carcass was poisoned with Furadan, they wouldn’t have suspected it because Furadan has no taste and no smell. It didn’t take long before the lions were found dead. One of the lions was pregnant with five cubs. One poisoned lion captured on camera could barely walk. Its nervous system was shutting down, so it was put down by vets from the Kenyan Wildlife Service who conducted an autopsy.Tribesman don’t have any trouble finding Furadan: it can be bought in towns and villages all over Kenya in stores called “Agro-Vets,” which sell agricultural products, including pesticides. In its granular form, Furadan is banned in Europe and the United Kingdom; it is severely restricted in the United States. Just a tiny amount from a $2 bottle is enough to kill an entire pride of lions.Furadan, even when used as directed, is estimated to have wiped out millions of birds in the United States and poses unacceptable risks to human health. That’s why the Environmental Protection Agency is in the process of banning it.But in Africa, Furadan is perfectly legal as a pesticide. However, when the granules are sprinkled on carcasses, any animal that feeds on them will die. And not just lions – hyenas, leopards, jackals, vultures and other birds die in droves.
